What it means
Prices paid by urban consumers were 3.7% higher in September 2026 than a year earlier. Core CPI, which drops volatile food and energy prices, was up 2.6%. The Fed's stated goal is 2% inflation, measured on a different index (PCE), but CPI is the first and most-watched monthly read.
Higher-than-expected CPI prints tend to push Treasury yields and mortgage rates up because markets expect the Fed to hold rates higher for longer; softer prints tend to do the opposite.
